Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry. Previously called hokku, it was given its current name by the Japanese writer Masaoka Shiki at the end of 19th century. Shiki suggested haiku as an abbreviation of the phrase "haikai no ku" meaning a verse of haikai. A hokku was the opening verse of a linked verse form, renku (haikai no renga). In Japanese, hokku and haiku are traditionally printed in one vertical line (though in handwritten form they may be in any reasonable number of lines). In English, haiku are usually written in three lines to equate to the three metrical phrases of a haiku in Japanese that consist of five, seven, and five on (the Japanese count morae, which differ from English-language syllables; for example, the word "haiku" itself counts as three on in Japanese (ha-i-ku), but two syllables in English (hai-ku); writing seventeen syllables in English produces a poem that is actually quite a bit longer, with more content, than a haiku in Japanese). Because Japanese nouns do not have different singular and plural forms, "haiku" is usually used as both a singular and plural noun in English as well. Thus, practicing haiku poets and translators refer to "many haiku" rather than "haikus".
Five Haiku by Paul Eluard
The wind
Undecided
Rolls a cigarette of air
The mute girl talks:
It is art's imperfection.
This impenetrable speech.
The motor car is truly launched:
Four martyrs' heads
Roll under the wheels.
Ah! a thousand flames, a fire,
The light, a shadow!
The sun is following me.
A feather gives to a hat
A touch of lightness:
The chimney smokes.

When I grow up, I Black,
When I go in Sun, I Black,
When I scared, I Black,
When I sick, I Black,
And when I die, I still black.
And you White fella,
When you grow up, you White,
When you go in Sun, you Red,
When you cold, you blue,
When you scared, you yellow,
When you sick, you Green,
And when you die, you Gray

1857 - 1924
Novelist and short story writer, one of the first of the Modernist movement; Polish-born
Joseph Conrad, one of the finest writers of English prose, was Polish and only started speaking English when he was 21. Born in Ukraine, his father's political activity caused the family to be exiled to Russia. Conrad's mother died when he was 7, and his father a short time afterwards. Conrad was cared for by his uncle; but ye longed to go to sea. In 1874 he did, embarking on a French vessel, and beginning his career as a sailor which supplied much material for his writing.
In 1886 he became a British subject and shortly afterwards a master mariner; he later settled in England and spent his time writing.
Conrad's narrative technique employs breaks in time by using a narrator (in several of his texts called Marlow) who also comments on the action.
Conrad was one of the leading Modernists; his texts, particularly one of his most famous short novels, Heart of Darkness, show an occupation with psychology and the unconscious mind. In many respects, his works preempted literature of the twentieth century.
Polish-born English novelist and short-story writer. In his famous preface to THE NIGGER OF THE 'NARCISSUS' (1897) Conrad crystallized his often quoted goal as a writer: "My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you fell - it is, above all, to make you see. That - and no more, and it is everything." Among Conrad's most popular works are LORD JIM (1900) and HEART OF DARKNESS (1902). Conrad discouraged interpretation of his sea novels through evidence from his life, but several of his novels drew the material, events, and personalities from his own experiences in different parts of the world. While making his first voyages to the West Indies, Conrad met the Corsican Dominic Cervoni, who was later model for his characters filled with a thirst for adventure.
"We live, as we dream - alone." (from Heart of Darkness, 1902)
